Arts for Learning Hires Over 50 Teen Interns to Create Art in Wynwood and Liberty City

Arts for Learning/Miami (A4L) summer internship programs are giving over 50 teens jobs in the arts, hiring them to create visual, performative and public artwork, while gaining important workforce skills and serving the community for six weeks. ArtWorks internship will culminate with an exhibition from 5 – 8 PM on July 18, 2019 and a showcase at 6 PM on July 20, 2019 at The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse (404 NW 26th Street, Miami, FL 33127).

Through the ArtWorks Internships in the Arts program, A4L hires high school students (aged 14-18) who have an interest in the arts to work with professional visual or performing artists to make art, as well as attend workforce skill development workshops on networking, resume writing, and public speaking, among other topics. Interns receive college advisement and are paid for their work in the program. Though not all are accepted, each teen who applies to the program is interviewed.

The Wall (In) program is a seven-week, paid internship in the arts, for which interns will research the historic remains of the Liberty City segregation wall on NW 12th Avenue and co-design community-based art projects and/or events for the site. Participating interns will work alongside artist and designer Chat Travieso, architect Germane Barnes to learn about community-based art through an interactive curriculum that will cultivate artistic leadership, encourage civic engagement, and build critical thinking skills.

No arts experience is necessary to participate in either internship, in an effort to increase access to and learning through the visual and performing arts.

This summer, A4L hired interns from throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties, hailing from Dr. Michael Krop Senior High, Miami Edision High School, Miami Norland Senior High School, The SEED School of Miami, Nova High School, Miami Northwestern Senior High, Design and Architecture Senior High, Doral Performing Arts and Entertainment Academy, Doctors Charter School of Miami Shores, Monsignor Edward Pace High School, Miami Central Senior High School, Miami Jackson Senior High School, South Miami Senior High School, North Park High School, Stellar Leadership Academy, SLAM (Sports Leadership and Management) Miami, Carol City Senior High, Miami Beach Senior High School, William H. Turner Technical Arts High School, Booker T. Washington Senior High School.

The summer 2019 ArtWorks Internship Program is generously supported by the Jonathan D. Lewis Foundation, and The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation at The Miami Foundation. The Wall (In) program is made possible by ArtPlace America and The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
