Doral 11

Arts for Learning is thrilled to have begun working in partnership with Doral Academy Preparatory School to provide in-school residency programs. A4L Teaching Artists developed and began implementing residency programs for both the fall and spring terms of this 2013-2014 school year. A4L Teaching Artists have been partnering with Middle and High School subject teachers at Doral Academy Preparatory School, infusing the arts into classroom lessons and working closely to address specific goals through the residencies’ design and activities. During fall sessions, Program Director Janet Evans and Teaching Artist Alejandro Bahia worked with three teachers and their seven 6th grade Language Arts classes, integrating choreography into lessons explaining the arc of a story (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution). Just as choreography in dance is a sequence of steps, movements, and trajectories, stories have their own sequences, movements and trajectories.  After reading Flipped, a novel by Wendelin van Draanen written from alternating perspectives, students worked in groups to choreograph and perform the arc of action within one chapter of the book.

In the spring of 2014, Mr. Bahia worked with World History teachers.
