Arts for Learning’s Lewis Arts Academy returns for its fourth summer of intensive visual arts study.

Arts for Learning’s first summer camps start on Monday and the readers of this blog are the first to get a sneak peek at some of the exciting projects our students will be exploring this summer with our fantastic teaching artists.

Our Lewis Arts Academy returns for its fourth summer of intensive visual arts study.  A dedicated group of middle school students will get a crash course in portfolio development, working daily on improving their drawing and painting skills with Teaching Artists Jenny Llewellyn Jones and Abdiel Acosta.  In the afternoons, the students will split into two groups and work with either Loriel Beltran on sculpture or create a film with Joseph Grant.  We are happy to announce that this program will be held in our new studio space in Coconut Grove!

Across the street from the Lewis Arts Academy, students at the Barnyard will be creating work for their own Carnival on August 3rd.  This site will host a collaboration between Afro-Cuban/Afro-Brazilian dancer Marisol Blanco, theater artist Joseph Grant, and visual artists Rene Morales, Aldo Luna, and Yanira Collado.  Proposed projects include giant carnival masks, dances from around the Caribbean, mixed media totem poles, digital imaging, and a selection of scenes by August Wilson.

Over at Touissant L’Ouverture Elementary, students will be creating a mural with Teaching Artist Rene Morales and learning to dance with Latrice Bruno.

Young artists at the Miramar Cultural Center/Arts Park will be exploring mixed media works with Teaching Artist Aurora Molina.  Soft sculptures, intuitive drawing, and self-portraiture are planned.

A very exciting addition to Arts for Learning’s services will launch this summer at the Bakehouse Art Complex.  High school students will have a unique opportunity to create art and acquire valuable job skills through a new paid internship called ArtWorks.  Inspired by a highly successful program created by our Young Audiences affiliate in Northeast Ohio, Miami’s own version of this innovative project will begin with a six-week summer program led by Teaching Artists Alejandro Bahia and Carlos Noguera.

Over the next few weeks, this blog will explore each of these exciting projects in more depth.  With first-hand stories from the artists and students, you will have a chance to experience the magic of these classes for yourself.  We look forward to sharing our summer with you!
